I came across this post on instagram by Nasneuro about the importance of constantly photographing/documenting our loved ones.
Long story short, it’s healthy for our brains.
In addition, as a NYC documentary wedding photographer, I firmly believe that photographs can act as bridges to additional memories. Especially on a wedding day, there’s so much going on and it can be difficult for the brain to remember every single detail but sometimes you’ll look at a photo and be instantly reminded of the smell of the air that day or something a loved one said right before or after the picture was taken. I say this because I’ve experienced it first hand. There are pictures from my childhood that I had no recollection of but once I came across them I remember some vivid details or the surrounding areas of where the picture was taken. Sometimes it’s the way the afternoon light poured into the car or the chocolate fudge dipped cone my mother bought from the ice-cream stand with the red roof on the beach during my childhood in Sydney.
But more than that, printing these photos and holding them in your hands as something tangible from a past memory is incredibly powerful too. Like pieces of history being passed down. I know we live in a digital age where everything lives on our phone but sometimes, you need things to live and inhabit the space your are in. If you’ve ever gone through old photo albums of your parents or loved ones, you’ll agree that it’s way better than scrolling on your phone.
Speaking of which, last fall I was on a trip with my best friend to Italy and she kept reminding me to send her pictures and videos that I was taking as well.
“Sometimes when I can’t sleep at night, I go back through pictures of old trips and it makes me happy and calms me down,” she said.
In that moment, it reinforced a lot of things for me.
Please print photos of your loved ones and your happy moments. Decorate your home with that good and wholesome energy. Invest in a polaroid camera if you will if you’re looking for something easy and instant.
